Movie Preferences and our Economy |
Here in the San Fernando Valley, much of our economy revolves around the big Hollywood studios and related service industries. It should concern all of us, therefore, that movie audiences have declined for the second year in a row. It would seem that more and more Americans feel out of touch with the values and politics of leading filmmakers, and the box office figures merely highlight that problem. As the entertainment industry looks ahead to the Academy Awards, it should be carefully observed that in addition to the phenomenally popular, religious blockbuster "The Passion of the Christ," six of the other top ten moneymaker films of 2004 were family-friendly releases --"Shrek 2," "Spider Man 2," "Harry Potter 3," "The Incredibles," "Shark Tale," "National Treasure.” Doesn’t it seem odd that none of these crowd-pleasers are considered candidates for major awards? How does that happen? Is it possible that Hollywood (and a good portion of our local economy) is in trouble precisely because the industry's preference for adults-only, edgy content has no correlation whatever with the “values” and preferences of the public? |
