Protect Religious Freedom: Oppose the Hate Crimes Bill
With a vote of 249-175, the US House of representatives passed the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009. It will now move to the Senate and, if passed there, will be signed into law by President Obama.
This legislation gives special protection to and establishes law for certain groups of people in our society, based only on their perceived “sexual orientation.” Under this “thought-crime” legislation, the investigation and prosecution of a real or perceived offense against a transvestite would be given priority over a similar crime committed against a grandmother. Many fear it will also be used to persecute any Christian whose public actions reflect their faith.
Liberal Democrats, pushing this measure—modeled on laws in foreign countries—through Congress, have vigorously opposed any amendments that would limit the law being used against people of faith. One advocate has admitted that a pastor could be arrested and jailed for simply reading passages of scripture that a protected group found offensive.
Our last chance to stop this assault on the Christian faith is to bombard the Senate with calls and emails pressuring them to oppose this dangerous legislation. Please take a moment right now to call both of your Senators or click here to use a simple online system to send them both an email.
Please take action today to make your voice heard!
